Screening & Q&A

Our moving image programme continues with the premiere screening of Building a Chula, an art documentary project produced by Beeing Together, a participatory platform initiated by Oreet Ashery in collaboration with artist Roo Dhissou, Rescued Clay, Ali Alzein of Bees & Refugees and Beatrice-Lily Lorigan.

Documented and edited by filmmaker Benjamin Crawford, the project follows the collective construction of a traditional South Asian outdoor clay oven – a chula – made using reclaimed clay from London building sites.

Through the process of building together, the film explores the agency of cobbing and collective making, bringing questions of material, labour, knowledge and community into conversation through the shared act of construction.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Prashant Patel of Rescued Clay, Dr Oreet Ashery and Benjamin Crawford, offering an opportunity to hear more about the project, its collaborative process and the ideas behind the film.

Presented as part of the Summer Streets moving image programme in North Acton Square.
